Can You Legally Drive in Japan?

Japan only accepts licences and permits from certain countries — pick yours below and we will tell you exactly what to bring.

Can’t find your country?

We’re happy to help you figure out what you need.

You can drive

Bring these documents

  • Your licence
  • An International Driving Permit

Apply for the permit in before you fly — they are not sold in Japan, and we cannot issue one for you.

Important: Make sure the permit says 1949. A 1968 Vienna Convention permit will not work, whatever else is on it.

Alternative

Stationed here with the US forces? A SOFA licence is enough on its own — no permit, no translation.

You can drive

Bring these documents

  • Your licence
  • An official JAF translation

Six countries do not issue permits Japan accepts, and is one of them. Instead you bring a Japanese translation of your licence, made by JAF — the Japan Automobile Federation. Order it from them before you travel.

Important: Make sure the translation is from JAF. A translation you arranged yourself is not accepted.

You can drive

Bring these documents

  • Your Japanese driving licence

A full Japanese licence in your own name is all you need. No permit, no translation.

Important: A learner permit or a provisional licence is not enough.

Ask us first

Japan only accepts licences and permits from a fixed list of countries, and is not one we can confirm here. Message us with a photo of your licence before you book and we will tell you straight away.

Important: Do not book on the assumption it will be fine — we cannot refund a Rider we are not allowed to let drive.

The four documents Japan accepts: a 1949 International Driving Permit with a passport, a home licence plus a JAF translation, a Japanese driving licence, and a US Forces Japan SOFA licence.
01 permit · 02 JAF translation · 03 Japanese licence · 04 SOFA

If you have any doubt, reach out to us. Send a photo of your licence on LINE or WhatsApp and we will tell you before you book.

What’s Included

Cosplay, an English guide, photos and video — in both Tours. Come an hour before your slot: check-in, dressing and the briefing all happen then, so budget about two and a half.

  1. Check in

Your licence and whatever permit or translation goes with it. No separate age limit: if your licence is valid here, you are old enough to ride.

  2. Pick your cosplay

Cosplay rental is included in the price, so this is a choice rather than an extra.

  3. Take the briefing

A guide walks you through the kart and the hand signals the convoy runs on. This is the part the hour is really for.

  4. Ride out

A guide leads, you follow. Single-seat, automatic, 60 km/h flat out, and the photos and video are taken for you as you go.

  5. Photos and memories

Your photos and video are sent to you before you leave — often with a printed set handed over as a keepsake too.

Where you are going

2-6-12 Kumoji 2-Chōme, Naha, Okinawa 900-0015, Japan〒900-0015 沖縄県那覇市久茂地2-6-12

Open 9:00 – 22:00, daily.

If the weather turns

These are open karts on open roads, so bad weather cancels the ride. If we call it off, you are refunded in full.

If your plans change

Free of charge up to seven days before your slot, for any reason. Inside seven days, contact us — we handle these case by case rather than by a flat rule.

If you’re looking at this, just book it. The ride around Naha was awesome. Ricky airdrops the photos he takes for free and guides you on a safe fun ride. People wave and smile, I had a lady on a bike ask for a picture. We stopped at the beach near the airport for snacks and bathroom break. 90 minutes doesn’t feel like that long, and you get to go through an underground tunnel, feels like some real Mario cart. Stop reading the review and just book it, you will have fun.

This is the best kart experience I ever have in Japan. Our guide was super friendly and helpful. He always helped us take photos whenever there is good views and able to capture great moments. The route is very beautiful and we went to some seaside views.

This was one of the best experiences we had in Japan. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and positive, and you could clearly see how much they enjoyed their work. Even though we went in the evening, they were still full of energy, smiling, and making sure we had an amazing time. It is rare to meet people who do their job with this much passion and genuinely enjoy helping others. The activity itself was great, but the staff made it truly special. The world needs more people like them. Highly recommended!

I mistakenly went to the wrong store, but everyone here was incredibly kind. They even rode a scooter to take me to the store where I actually had my reservation. If I come back to Okinawa next time, I will definitely visit this shop and support it to show my gratitude. Thank you so much for your kindness!

My fiancé and I have been go karting all over Japan, and this one with Gorilla was just as fun as the others. Senaga Island was awesome, was nice to enjoy the views in between the karting. Will be back next time we are in Okinawa 👍

Frequently Asked Questions

The six things riders ask most, once the licence question is out of the way.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive a go-kart in Okinawa?

Almost certainly, yes. These are road-legal karts on public roads, so Japanese law decides who may drive.

You need one of four things: a Japanese driving licence, an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, a licence from one of six listed countries plus an official JAF translation, or a SOFA licence. Your home licence on its own is never enough.

Is there a height or weight limit?

Yes. Maximum weight is 130 kg and maximum height is 180 cm. Both are limits of the kart itself, so there is nothing we can do at the counter for a rider over either one — check before you book.

Do I drive, or am I a passenger?

You drive. The karts are single-seat, so everyone in the convoy is driving their own.

How fast do the karts go?

Up to 60 km/h. They are automatic — no gears, no clutch.

Is it a track, or real roads?

Real roads, in live traffic, in an escorted convoy with a guide in front. The route runs past Kokusai Dori and the airport coast. This is a city ride, not a circuit.

What language does the guide speak?

English and Japanese.
